We hope you all enjoyed a joyful, restful holiday season and are finding great hope and resolve as we meet 2018–even in today’s snowy New England weather.

We cannot begin to thank each and every one of you for the outpouring of love and support–physical, emotional, spiritual and, of course, financial–that you have all have given us.  We are humbled by your on-going kindness as we travel this road toward a kidney transplant for Nick.

Thankfully, we were able to celebrate Christmas at home after several visits and inpatient stays at Boston Children’s to begin peritoneal dialysis.  After much consideration and a false start toward hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis (PD) was determined to be the safest type of dialysis for Nick. (Yes, there are different types! Who knew!?)

What this has meant for Nick is another surgery and some definite pain/discomfort as his body adjusts to this daily, 10-hour treatment.  We were hopeful that Nick’s body had adjusted, but just last night he was woken 3 times in discomfort, needing to pause his treatment.  

This has also meant a significant impact on his typically packed schedule.  In true Nick style, he has been in good spirits, commenting with his usual “I’m okay,” or “I’m fine.” However, his participation in school, internships and his beloved sports have limited by his fatigue and treatment.

Like Nick, we remain upbeat, resilient and hopeful.  With a son like Nick and his positive, can-do attitude, how could we be otherwise!

We are encouraged at the possibility of finding a living donor–truly, the most incredible gift– as several people have come forward to learn about the process. We will do our absolute best to  keep you all posted as we learn more.

Finally, we would be grateful if you would keep us in your thoughts and prayers, specifically for  Nick’s comfort as he adjusts to and endures his treatment until we find a donor, and for continued health and endurance for our family as we work to adjust to a “new normal”–and still attend all the Salem State Baseball games this spring season! (63 days until the boys arrive in Tuscon, AZ for Spring Training, but who’s counting!)
