Kidney Transplant Recipient

Giving Families Hope for the Holidays

Throughout December, we want you to see exactly how the Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) is giving transplant families nationwide HOPE for the holidays. COTA kid, Mira Raether, was one of triplets when she was born 10 years ago. While her brothers, Luke and Vincent, were born healthy, Mira was born with serious kidney problems…

“It is now six years post kidney transplant for Mira. She and her triplet brothers are now in the 4th grade. Our lives no longer revolve around non-stop trips to hospitals, lab work appointments and doctor visits. I am no longer connected to the phone constantly talking to insurance representatives, doctors or waiting for test results.

Our children were born in 2005 and up until then we thought we had good health care insurance. Mira hit her lifetime cap on our private insurance. We searched for solutions to find alternative ways to get her coverage, but she had so many pre-existing conditions no one would take her. We had to find a way to raise money to get her the life-saving kidney transplant she desperately needed.

Then we stumbled upon COTA. I instantly knew it was the answer to our prayers! I called a few friends who called a few friends and in a matter of days we had a full scale COTA fundraising team in place. We could now pay for her transplant and her ongoing post-transplant care.

This holiday season we are feeling very blessed. Mira is our very own beautiful Miracle. She enjoys a lifestyle of a typical 9-year-old. She loves Girl Scouts, golf, gymnastics, Mine Craft, her iPod, bike rides, swimming, playing with friends … the same things all of her friends enjoy. We are very blessed and we are very thankful for the gift that is the Children’s Organ Transplant Association."
