NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Mother's Day is going to be special a Mother's Day this year for a family who's spent the better part of the last 18 months at Vanderbilt's Children's Hospital in Nashville. Next month, Jada Daves will donate a kidney to her 18-month-old son to save his life. "It's our best chance," she told Nashville's News 2. "We may have 20 years on this kidney, if everything goes, well and then he'll need a second transplant and my oldest children are already saying, 'Mommy, in 15 to 20 years, we'll be old enough to donate.'"

Daves' son, Shafer, was born with Denys-Drash Syndrome, a very rare illness. Since 1967, doctors say there have been only 200 known cases in the world. "It comes with kidney failure [and] Wilms' tumor, which is cancer of the kidney," Daves explained. "We were in a race. Will the kidneys fail first or will he have the presentation of cancer." Shafer's kidneys failed on his first birthday, forcing doctors to remove them, and he has been on dialysis 11 hours a day ever since.

However, on June 6, the blue-eyed-boy will get a new kidney in a rare transplant from his mother. "In my evaluation process, I had to see a social worker and they had to talk to me about the risk involved," Daves said. "It's minimal but they have to talk to you about the 'D' word." Still, Daves says the surgery is worth the risk. "God is in this. This is supernatural," she said. "This is miraculous, so that's one for the medical books. This is the happiest I have ever been on Mother's Day. This will be a very happy Mother's Day because I've been chosen to care for baby Shafer."

Shafer has already undergone six surgeries and the cost of a transplant is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. A Web site and fund has been set up to help meet the costs involved in the treatment and care.
