Weston’s Story

Weston is truly is our little miracle baby. After 15 years of marriage, God decided it was time for us to have the baby we had always longed for. Weston has a 12 year old brother, Keigan, that mommy and daddy adopted when he was eight months old. Keigan was super excited when he learned that he was going to be a big brother.

After a perfectly normal, healthy pregnancy, Weston was born November 16th, 2018. He weighed 9 lbs., 10 oz. and was 22” long.

At three days old, it was discovered that some of Weston’s lab tests were abnormal. We were given a huge list of potential causes, each one scarier than the last. We began seeing a GI/Liver specialist at Cardinal Glennon when Weston was only two weeks old. Labs were monitored and testing was done, and it was determined that Weston had a congenital liver disease called Biliary Atresia. On January 7th, 2019, when Weston was just seven weeks, old, he underwent an eight-hour surgery called a Kasai Procedure. The Kasai Procedure is completed by taking a section of the small intestine to make a drainage system for bile to escape the liver. Weston sailed through surgery and recovery like a champ!

However, at about five months old (April/May 2019), Weston’s labs began to show signs of liver disfunction again. After some testing, it was determined that the Kasai Procedure may not be working as well as we had hoped.

On May 3rd, we had an appointment with Weston’s liver doctor. After some tests and blood work to rule out all potential (correctable) causes of the increased signs of liver disfunction, testing pointed to normal progression of Biliary Atresia. So, Weston began his journey to be placed on the National Organ Transplant list.
