{"id":30,"date":"2020-05-21T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-21T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cota1.wpengine.com\/cotaforadamk\/?p=30"},"modified":"2023-10-27T20:54:01","modified_gmt":"2023-10-27T20:54:01","slug":"adam-kurth-20-for-2020-cota-virtual-graduation","status":"publish","type":"event","link":"https:\/\/cota.org\/cotaforadamk\/events\/adam-kurth-20-for-2020-cota-virtual-graduation\/","title":{"rendered":"Adam Kurth $20 for 2020 COTA Virtual Graduation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Adam Kurth $20 for 2020 COTA Graduation Campaign<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><br \/>Despite missing 25 days of schooling, his grades and classes are on track, and Adam Kurth, who received a liver transplant a month ago, will graduate with his class on May 21, 2020, from Desert Mountain High School.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Background:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp; At the age of 17, Adam Kurth found out he had primary sclerosing cholangitis or PSC.&nbsp; PSC is a disease that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creates a long-term progressive dysfunction of the <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Liver\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liver<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PSC causes <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Inflammation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inflammation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;and scarring of the&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bile_duct\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bile ducts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which generally allow the bile&nbsp;to drain from the liver.&nbsp; The bile duct scarring, which occurs in PSC, narrows the canals of the biliary tree and impedes the flow of&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bile\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bile<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;from the liver to the intestines. Eventually, it can lead to&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cirrhosis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cirrhosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;of the liver and&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Liver_failure\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liver failure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When the onset occurs in children, the disease is usually more aggressive.&nbsp; PSC also increases the risk of various cancers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately for Kurth, he was able to receive a liver donation, thanks to the <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phoenixchildrens.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phoenix Children&rsquo;s Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a donor.&nbsp; The transplant took place on April 3, 2020.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">But after graduation, and a liver transplant in the middle of the pandemic, Kurth will continue with numerous medications, hospital checkups, and more to ensure his new liver remains healthy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">A study of his original liver post-transplant showed lymphoma. Kurth is one of a handful of documented cases to have both PSC and lymphoma. Phoenix Children&rsquo;s is hopeful that they removed it all with the transplant, but Kurth will undergo chemotherapy in the coming months to make sure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">His family has partnered with the Children&rsquo;s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) for fundraising assistance and family support. A transplant costs $100,000 to 800,000. Even if covered by insurance, families face out-of-pocket expenses that add up to tens of thousands of dollars annually for transplant families with lifetime totals exceeding $1,000,000. In cases where a shortfall exists, COTA helps bridge the financial gap.
