We have been in CA now for over a month! Well, I should say Cohen has been in CA a month. Colby and I have been rotating spots at home with our girls but were so blessed to all be down here this past Thanksgiving week. It was much needed for all of us to be together. Thank you to my parents for joining us also since we really could get a call at any time and the girls would need to fly home with someone. The hug Cohen gave both his sisters at the airport was such a testament to his love for them and how much he misses them.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are truly doing our best to look at the gratitude in each day so we do not become weary or lose hope. We are so incredibly thankful and humbled that the COTA goal was met today! We are praising Jesus for His provision and so grateful to each of you that have sacrificed financially for COTA on our behalf. The relief COTA funds give us, especially with all the uncertainty around his medical care, is beyond what I can express. Thank you<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also want to say thank you to Cohen\u2019s teachers at Nampa Christian. Mrs Weymouth and the 2nd grade team have gone above and beyond to encourage Cohen, send cards and videos, coordinate gifts for Cohen, and keep him connected to this community. It has been so life giving to us all! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cohen has thankfully remained stable over the last 2 weeks. Due to high ammonia levels and lowering oxygen levels his team was able to request extra points for his listing status and those were approved prior to Thanksgiving. We are focusing on keeping him eating (his appetite is getting worse and worse), having often bowel movements (to lower toxicity in his brain from his liver not working well to clear them), and keeping his activity up even when he is fatigued so he can stay strong for his surgery. He wears oxygen around the clock these days except for when he\u2019s a typical 7 year old and needs a break \ud83d\ude42  He has appointments coming with cardiology and nephrology, and has been referred for PT. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At his weekly appointment with the liver transplant clinic today one of the transplant surgeons came in and gave us some insight into what is happening behind the scenes. We now have a living donor who they want to keep in the back pocket, but want him to continue waiting for a deceased donor. There are surgical benefits to this for Cohen\u2019s size\/diagnosis of HPS. First, the liver would not have to be a partial liver that has to regenerate while his system is trying to normalize the shunts that cause difficulty breathing. It also gives them more vessels to work with and makes it a less technical surgery. They are waiting for the best match for him. If anything, it is encouraging to be able to put your trust in these specialists that know what they are doing. Cohen is getting offers that haven\u2019t been exactly what they want yet. We continue to trust God\u2019s timing in this as we pray that an open door comes soon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difficulty of a deceased donor is hard to wrap your mind around. Colby and I were able to express that each day\/night we don\u2019t receive a call we do hope that means that someone\u2019s prayers were answered. That someone lived. That a miracle happened for another. And at the right time, we pray for a story to be redeemed and a door to open for Cohen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not lost on us that we are surrounded here at Ronald McDonald by families who are also in the some of the hardest days of their story. We hope that the encouragement we have received from home will fill us to encourage others.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colby and the girls are back home now. Cohen and I might make a count down chain for when they will be back for Christmas. We might also give this Ronald McDonald room a little Christmas cheer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We continue to pray that<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-each of our kids are comforted in their sadness of being apart <\/p>\n\n\n\n

-right liver at the right time for Cohen<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-that Cohen stays stable and healthy from viruses <\/p>\n\n\n\n
