Friday was a rough day. We got a call from Jake\u2019s cardiologist in Peoria that the transmission from his pacemaker showed that his arterial lead had fractured early in the month. This wasn’t the first time he’d fractured a lead; just a few months ago, in April, we faced an emergency surgery when his ventricular lead fractured. That time, his heart rate dropped into the 40s and he immediately knew something wasn’t right. We took him to the ER in Peoria and were sent from there to St Louis Children’s to have the emergency surgery. His body was not able to tolerate that rhythm long term. It was during that stay that we were officially listed for transplant.This time, however, was different. The day before the call, Jake had been at physical therapy. He was able to sprint a portion of his walk test. He was maintaining a normal heart rate and sats (or normal for him at least). This time, he seems to be tolerating this new rhythm without the arterial lead. Because he\u2019s doing so well, the doctors have decided to let him stay in this rhythm for now. Of course, we have to watch him closely. If we notice any changes in his energy, appetite, or vitals, we’ll need to go to the hospital and change our heart transplant status from 1B to 1A (which means remaining inpatient). We are currently listed 1B (which means he has significant interventions including IV medications but is able to wait as an outpatient).While the news was difficult, hitting Jake and all of us pretty hard, his anxiety quickly turned into determination. He’s focusing on getting ready, both mentally and physically for our call. This call was a reminder that things can change in an instant, but for now, we’re taking it a day at a time, and remaining grateful to be waiting at home together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
