Jake\u2019s victories are being measured in liters, meters and as of recently, lollipops. While we are all incredibly anxious to be back home under one roof, we are still celebrating the determination Jake is showing every single day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, the best medicine isn’t a medicine at all but a little bit of motivation. As a special treat, the Speech Therapy team allowed Jake to have 6 licks of a sucker as a reward for getting through his difficult breathing treatments. Thanks to the generosity of some friends, we were able to stock up on a big bag of Dum Dums just for him. With this new motivation, Jake has been a machine, tackling his breathing treatments as often as every 15 minutes! Seeing him take charge of his recovery is exactly the spark we need to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His physical strength is truly beginning to shine. In just the past few days, he has managed to double his walking distance, from averaging 350 meters per walk to now going 700 meters. Watching him put in that kind of work while his body is still hurting is nothing short of inspiring. He is quite literally walking his way toward recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His respiratory status is showing consistency. Yesterday, during the day, he was able to move down to a 4L nasal cannula for oxygen instead of the high flow and most importantly, his sats held beautifully with that level of support. To help address the persistent air pockets (pneumos), the team started a nitrogen washout today. The air we breathe is mostly nitrogen and only a little bit of oxygen (about 21%). Therefore the air trapped outside his lungs is also, mostly nitrogen which is very slow to be absorbed by the body. During a nitrogen washout, Jake is given 100% oxygen for a period of time through his oxygen cannula. This “washes” the nitrogen out of his blood and lungs. The nitrogen trapped in those air pockets is forced to move into the blood to balance, and the body can then exhale it. We hope this will help those stubborn air pockets to shrink and disappear faster since the placement of the pockets is difficult to access with chest tubes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are also moving forward with the current chest tubes. Today, the team was able to turn down the suction from high suction (-40) to low suction (-20). The next anticipated step is to move the tubes to “water seal” for at least 24 hours. If his lungs tolerate this without the air pockets returning or getting bigger, we can finally move toward removing the tubes entirely. Removing them will be a total game-changer for his mobility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, the “littles” are no longer able to visit (they were permitted to only for the week of Christmas) and the separation feels heavy once again. Being a “split family” is difficult on everyone and we find ourselves missing the chaos of being together. But Jake is progressing. It may be at a slower pace than our hearts desire, but he is moving forward, one walk and one Dum Dum at a time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please pray for continued strength and progress for Jake and patience for all us during this long recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
