Organ donation offers local boy a second chance at life<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) has been removing the financial barriers for families facing transplants for nearly 40 years. Here in Erie, Pa., the story hits home for the Allgeier family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six-year-old Jonah Allgeier received a heart transplant on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024, after living at the Cleveland Clinic for four months. Jonah was diagnosed with a rare heart condition in November 2022 and suffered cardiac arrest on November 26, 2023. He miraculously survived \u2014 thanks to lifesaving efforts performed by his father. He was not allowed to leave the hospital until the call came in that a new heart was available. He received the call for that lifesaving heart transplant on Good Friday, March 29th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

COTA organizes volunteers across the country to raise funds for transplant-related expenses. For that reason, Jonah’s family turned to COTA for assistance, support and guidance. COTA funds help with expenses such as food and lodging while the family is at the transplant center; transportation to and from the transplant center; co-pays, deductibles and medications, along with post-transplant continuing care. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transplant families from every corner of this country have worked with COTA. Since 1986, generous individuals have made contributions to help ensure transplant-needy children and young adults receive a second chance at life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

April is National Donate Life Month. Last year in this country, more than 46,000 transplants were performed. But every day 17 people die in the U.S. waiting for an organ transplant. One donor can save eight lives and enhance over 75 more.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
