For a long time, I put off the task of raising funds for Josiah’s heart transplant, as it felt overwhelming, and I didn’t know where or how to start. However, back in the fall, I finally looked into COTA, and what I learned blew me away.

They provide a tried and true structure that has worked for the past 30 years, but here are the personal reasons we chose them.

1. 100% of funds are set aside for Josiah’s transplant costs<\/strong>, both before and after. They don’t take a percentage, as they raise their operational funds separately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. These funds will be available for the rest of his life<\/strong>, as a transplant is not a one and done surgery. As his cardiology team made sure we knew, he is trading one condition for another that will last his lifetime. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. While the funds are designated for Josiah’s transplant should he no longer need them, they can return to the bigger fund to help other needy families. This means the funds are never considered income for Josiah or us<\/strong>, and cannot interfere with Social Security Disability or Medicaid, for which he just qualified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. It can cover medical bills, travel expenses, insurance premiums, and even loss of income for any caregivers.<\/strong> Given that we live so close to the hospital, we hope that most of the funds will be dedicated to Josiah’s medical bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. They insist that the family builds a Fundraising Team<\/strong> that is responsible for heading up fundraising efforts. They do not want any of the burden to be on the family. They can be involved as they are able, but should not be in charge in any way. I’ll share more in another post about the needs we have in this area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given that Josiah is 20, we are preparing him for independent living once his health is stable. This is one of those ways, as he will most likely be limited in terms of jobs in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
