We celebrated the most important gifts of Easter this weekend: being together and feeling good.  It serves as a reminder that those are some of the simplest things in life that cannot be taken for granted.  Riley spent Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the hospital with Logan, with a special sleepover on Saturday night.  Logan and Riley find so much joy in each others\u2019 presence.  They hid dozens of Easter eggs for some of the other hospital patients on the floor, played games, watched movies, and spent hours each day hamming it up with the nurses and social workers.  It\u2019s a boost to all of our spirits to have these times of solace and happiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Logan has continued to feel well, as he has now for the past several weeks.  That is notwithstanding quite a complicated daily balancing of an impressive number of factors in his post-surgical care.  As we mentioned in the last post, Logan started post-transplant Chemotherapy last Wednesday.  He is just now reaching the point in the cycle where his blood counts are bottoming out.  He received platelet transfusions Saturday and again today.  Until his immune system and counts start to rebound, the doctors will likely hold things steady and not make any major changes.  We\u2019re happy to be back on the oncology floor, where Logan has an array of caring, kind and brilliant nurses looking out for him that know him well, and who Logan feels very comfortable with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Logan got another scoping and biopsy today, which came back similar to the last one he got last Thursday.  Both showed \u201cmild rejection\u201d within the intestines.  The typical way to deal with that would be to adjust rejection medications or potentially give more steroids, but for the time being the doctors are not going to make any major changes.  The Adenovirus numbers came back today and started to rise again.  More steroids or immunosuppressants would further prevent him from fighting that virus off, so at least for the time being, we will hold steady.  Plus, for all intents and purposes, Logan\u2019s immune system is pretty wiped out from the Chemo at this point. It is a good sign that he remains comfortable and energetic despite all the competing medications and protocols he is following.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the past week, there have been off-hand comments about \u201cwhen Logan goes home\u201d and a general gist that it might not be too far off.  But then again, on a daily basis, the doctors are still monitoring and adjusting for so many variables it\u2019s hard to imagine that will just stop in short order.  So for now we\u2019re taking the days as they come and not getting ahead of ourselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We wish for everyone who celebrated the holidays (any holidays) this weekend a time of peace, renewal, and hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
