Blood sugar was stable all night. Now that Mylin’s pump is on automated mode the nurses no longer come in to do finger pricks every 3 hours and it makes for a quieter night. In the morning, I woke up, grabbed an omelet from the cafeteria, and started work. Mylin kept snoozing till after 9am! I was nervous about how they would be after yesterday’s nausea set back. Thankfully, when they woke up they seemed much better. They were immediately talkative and asked for the food menu right away. They finished bacon, potatoes, and a fruit cup. An hour later they said they were still hungry so they ordered more potatoes and bacon. The team decided to proceed with discharging us after lunch to the Ronald McDonald House today after delaying it yesterday.

By the time 2 pm rolled around they were hungry again and ordered a big lunch. They ate the whole thing! The only problem was I should’ve slowed them down a bit. Due to the bowl and stomach resection, delayed gastric emptying is an issue for a while post TPIAT. Eating a big meal can make them feel crappyl. We did the carb correction bolus for lunch and then headed to an activity the hospital had going on.

Mylin had just started the craft when I noticed their blood sugar had dropped to 85. That is low for having just eaten a bunch carbs not too long ago. 5 minutes later it was down to 70! Mylin was starting to feel a bit light headed too. We left the craft and went straight to the elevator back to our floor. I helped Mylin back to the bed in their room. Their sugar was down to 60 at that point. I asked Mylin to eat some skittles (it still seems so weird to me that they are good fast acting carb they tell you to use) but they said they were too nauseous to swallow anything. Low blood sugar combined with too much food for lunch is to blame there. I called the nurses to get some orange juice and we gave them half of it through the J tube. 15 minutes later their sugar was 95. Phew! Or so I thought… 30 minutes later the low blood sugar alarm on the phone was going off. Mylin’s sugar was back down 60. Then the finger prick showed 55! Back came the nurses and this time we gave the full orange juice through the J tube. 15 minutes later their blood sugar was back in normal range and stayed there. Not what I was hoping for today, but I’m thankful we were able to control it quickly. I reviewed things with the diabetes team and adjusted Mylin’s carb correction ratio from 20 to 25. Our carb counting for lunch was spot on, but the ratio needed to be tweaked because they got too much insulin.

After the low blood sugar, I gave Mylin an hour to rest before we discharged. I packed up a wagon and walked all of our stuff over to the Ronald McDonald House. I then returned to get Mylin. At this point it was 7pm when the nurses do shift changes and there’s a bunch of controlled chaos on the floor. Mylin and I stopped at the nurse station to let them know we were leaving and they said “no, you can’t leave yet!.” It was so sweet. They had made Mylin a sign and had a “discharge party” cheering Mylin on with pom poms as they left the floor. Can’t lie, I was fighting back tears. As we took the elevator down to the car Mylin told me they were glad they did the surgery and that they already feel better than they did beforehand. They have said many times throughout recovery how this pain is no different then what they felt on the daily pre-surgery. Their take away from that is validation. Despite many brushing them off, Mylin’s pain was extreme and now they have a great way to quantify just how bad. TPIAT is an extremely hard surgery to recover from and they are doing it like a champ!

We got settled in across the street and I spent a long time cataloging and organizing the many bags of meds. I then double checked my reminder times to make sure I’ve got it all covered. I told My to call me nurse papa as I was delivering meds through the J tube. Finally, we relaxed and started watching the Princess of Mononoke. Our goal is to get through all of the Studio Gibli movies while here. Tomorrow is the start of what the next few weeks will look like. We have frequent appointments at the hospital across the street but spend our time at Ronald McDonald. We can go do stuff! My has yet to walk more than a few floors at the hospital but I should be able to get a wheelchair for the zoo here.
