Tif had the idea of keeping a blog of our TPIAT journey with Mylin and, as usual, she had a great idea. It’s been great in several ways. Mylin has so many people on their team who are rooting for them and care deeply about how they are doing. The blog has allowed us to keep everyone updated on what’s going on, and saved them from the pressure of wanting to ask us for updates frequently. It’s also serving as a journal of sorts. But one of the biggest motivations though was to provide a resource for other people looking into TPIAT surgery. When Tif first discovered the surgery we did the natural thing of scouring the internet for information about it. It’s easy to find what the surgery is, why it is done, and clinical numbers on outcomes from research studies. What is not easy to come by is people’s personal experience with it. I only ever found a few short blogs on it. Most of the info is brief stories or interviews in 3 minute videos. Those are great, but we wanted more. Our hope is that we can provide such a resource here as we chronicle our experience and the ups and downs of recovery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus far we have been incredibly fortunate as Mylin has exceeded all predictions about long recovery would take. They’ve had a lot of great days this week. I also want to make sure to capture the hard parts that come along. Our old friend high blood sugar was a jerk last night. The alert on the phone went off every 20 minutes keeping me awake until it had been long enough since the last bolus that it was safe to administer a correction bolus at 12:30am. (Side note: I learned that bolus just means a dose of something in medical terms. In diabetes it just means giving a dose of insulin, usually to cover carbs you’ve eaten or to correct high blood sugar). Even though we are out of the hospital there are still sleepless nights involved. I don’t think Mylin slept great until later in the night either. They slept till 11 am this morning. I was starving but let them rest due to the night we had. Mylin took a shower after waking, and after they got out, told me they got really dizzy, almost passed out, and had to sit down in the shower for a bit. Nerve wracking to say the least. Later in the day one of the doctors on the diabetes team, who herself has type 1 diabetes, told me that’s actually a somewhat common thing. Something about the warm, moist air can cause blood sugar spikes that make people feel sick like that. Thankfully they felt better after they got out of the shower. I then tried to keep them out of the room at Ronald McDonald for a while since there will be a lot of that while I work this week. Before we left to go get food Mylin showed me the top of the incision on their abdomen and it looked infected. We sent a picture to the abdominal surgery team (shout out to the workaholic angel Christie), and they agreed it needed attention. Now Mylin gets to add 3 massive antibiotic pills to the plethora of other pills they swallow during the day. Hopefully it gets taken care of quickly and doesn’t lead to larger issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This afternoon we went on saw the movie Some Like it Hot<\/a> at the Ohio theater <\/a>in downtown Columbus. It’s a historic theater, originally built in 1928, and it’s hard to describe just how extravagant it is inside. They had a live organist playing a theater organ before the movie until the organ was lowered beneath the stage. The movie was pretty funny as well. Afterwards it was boring errand running as we picked up groceries and stopped by the pharmacy. Overall a good day and I continue to see daily improvement in Mylin. They are killing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
