Blood sugars stayed in a better range last night. I appreciated not waking up to the Dexcom alarm going off constantly. I still notice a trend where Mylin’s blood sugar elevates a bit for the first couple hours of sleep before setting back down to range, but it was always below 180 last night. It was time to change the omnipod insulin pump this morning. I used a fresh bottle of insulin to test my hypothesis that the insulin had weakened a bit in the bottle that was almost empty, but that did not bear fruit. I also saw an odd behavior in the omnipod this morning. We were bolusing the carbs for breakfast, and it lowered the insulin by a half unit due to insulin on board, despite the blood sugar being right in range at 119. I later learned the algorithm using history, trends leading up to the bolus, and other info to determine that. We did the bolus before eating this morning, rather than after, and still saw a spike after the meal above 200. Our next goal is to start pre bolusing with 10-15 gap before actually eating to help reduce the post meal spikes. It’s hard to know ahead of time whether Mylin will eat a whole portion due to healing from the resection of the stomach and intestines. They tell you to bolus after you eat to make sure you don’t overdose on insulin by not finishing what you already bolused for. I called the endocrinology team to talk about the issues with riding high we were having. We agreed to adjust the carb ration back to 20, where it was prior to discharge. That setting worked in the hospital but they had changed after we had a major low post meal that day. Dinner went much better with that setting. They only got up to 145 after eating and quickly settled back down to 108. I’m glad to have that sorted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had an appointment with the pain team in the early afternoon. Mylin says their pain has been at a 3 and it’s not much pain at all. Six was their baseline pre-surgery so I just love hearing that. We are going to start weaning off of the scheduled Tylenol. Gabapentin will be the only remaining pain medication after that. They want us to stay on gabapentin for several months even after we go home. The pain doc also mentioned we are likely to get cleared to go home in 1 to 2 weeks! That is blowing my mind! She also mentioned they tend to tell you with no notice “ok you are good to go home now”. That will make travel planning fun lol. Regardless it’s exacting. At most, Mylin will miss only 1-2 weeks of school. You all should know Tif called that and I “Schaaff’d” her about it. As we left that appointment Mylin said “I think I’m ready to try stairs”. They did great and we used the stairs to get to the car on the 3rd floor. PT will love it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wild thing today was getting pictures of Mylin’s pancreas from the surgery. A healthy pancreas is a yellow\/tan color. Mylin’s pancreas was most definitely _not_ that. It was a dark red, purply color. I was really tempted to post that picture on the blog but I’ll spare you \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n
