Dexcom is on my list right now. Mylin’s Dexcom sensor was expiring last night. I put the new one on and let it soak for a bit before I opened the Dexcom app and switched the connection the new sensor. About 30 minutes after that the insulin pump started beeping at us because it didn’t have a sensor. I had forgot that you need to connect to the sensor separately there. No biggie, except the sensor would not connect! I tried repeatedly for 2 hours and never succeeded. That meant pulling sensor off and installing a new one. I put a second new sensor on, and this time it started bleeding a ton right through the hole in the sensor. When it bleeds like the sensor fails and you have to replace it. That meant we had burned 2 sensors already! Then, when I took that 2nd new sensor off, I saw the filament was not attached to the sensor. The spot we removed it from had a bump that felt like something was there, so I thought the filament was stuck in their skin. I called endocrinology and they said we were safe to leave it over night and it usually works itself out. I then proceeded to open a 3rd Dexcom sensor. I placed the sensor, waited for its 30 minute warm up period, connected it in the Dexcom app, and then this time it connected right away to the Omnipod. This process started about 10:30pm and I think the universe is conspiring to never let me sleep again. We thought we’d try to sleep a bit later to catch up a bit, but the jokes on us! Our alarms started going off saying Mylin’s blood sugar was 59. I pulled myself out of bed, got the accu-check, and did a finger prick to verify. Their actual blood sugar was 109. A few minutes later the Dexcom sensor stopped reporting for about 40 minutes before it decided to just work again on its own. Get it together Dexcom! The bump from the bad sensor had gone down this morning, and I thankfully I couldn’t see sign of the filament under the skin with the swelling down. It did leave a nasty bruise though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had appointments with GI and Endocrinology in the afternoon, both of which were easy. The GI doc told Mylin what a killer job they were doing, beating all estimates for their recovery to date. It was another time where I sat there listening to Mylin say they didn’t have pain, they didn’t have nausea, and just feeling like I need to pinch myself. That means weaning off of more medications. Periactin, which helps stimulate appetite, will start tapering off from its current 3 daily doses and be done after this weekend. That is also the last drug that is going through the GJ tube. All good news!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Endocrinology listened to my tale of woe about the previous night’s Dexcom adventures, and then we made some more adjustments to the Omnipod settings. Omnipod recently released support for a target glucose level of 100, which we switched to from the previous level of 110. When lowered the carb ration further to 18 to help control things after meals better. I’ll be watching this closely to make sure we don’t hit any hypoglycemic moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
