You are exhausted, your head hurts, and you are stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your boss walks over and barks at you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFile this. Sit up straight. Why isn&#8217;t this done? Do it now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How would you react? You\u2019d probably snap. Or you\u2019d want to quit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, that is how we talk to our medically complex kids. It feels like a threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their Smoke Detector (from Post 1) hears a command and thinks: &#8220;I am being forced! Danger! Fight back! I hate everyone including my doctor and my mom!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Result: Screaming, hiding under the table, or throwing the shoes at your head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-fix-using-declarative-language-to-reduce-anxiety-in-kids-with-medical-needs\"><strong>The Fix: Using Declarative Language to Reduce Anxiety<\/strong> in Kids with Medical Needs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To fix this, we need to change our User Interface. We need to stop acting like a Dictator and start acting like a Narrator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s called Declarative Language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You state the data. You let them process it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The &#8220;Say This, Not That&#8221; Swap List<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Don&#8217;t say:<\/strong> &#8220;Put on your coat right now!&#8221; (This is a Command. It triggers a fight).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do say:<\/strong> &#8220;It is freezing outside. Your coat is on the hook.&#8221; (This is Data. It triggers thinking).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Don&#8217;t say:<\/strong> &#8220;Don&#8217;t spill that milk!&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do say:<\/strong> &#8220;Whoa, that cup is super full. It looks wobbly.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-this-works-keeping-the-thinking-brain-online\"><strong>Why This Works: Keeping the Thinking Brain Online<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you use Declarative Language, you invite the child to think. You aren&#8217;t cornering them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It keeps the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/tap.health\/which-is-the-main-thinking-part-of-the-brain-exploring-the-brains-role-in-thought-and-cognition\/\">Thinking Brain<\/a>&#8221; online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my house, this saved my sanity. My kid wasn&#8217;t stubborn. They were just tired of being ordered around by doctors, nurses, and me.
