There is absolutely no way to prepare as a parent to see how sick your child will get through the BMT process. The doctors and nurses were very specific how sick Paige would be, but until you live it you simply can’t comprehend. Paige has had the dreaded Mucositis, which makes her vomit countless times a day and has turned her mouth and throat raw and extremely painful. She has lost all of her hair, which has been as difficult for her and Lisa. The doctors have put her on around the clock morphine drip for pain, with a button that she can push to get an extra dose when she is in more pain. For some reason Paige has not wanted to take extra medications, we are not sure why. They have also had to put her on platelet and blood transfusions.<\/div>\n

Paige has not eaten now for more than 6 days and barely takes a sip of water it is simply too painful to her. Even feedings through her G-tube have not been able to be administered the last few days as they make her vomit. She is getting all of her necessary nutrients through her central line. At this point Paige mainly just sleeps and occasionally watches her iPad, with very little interaction.<\/div>\n

As bad as all of this sounds and is to watch as a parent the doctors keep reassuring us that it is all “normal” and part of the process. They say she is exactly where she should be at this point. It is comforting to hear, but our hearts still ache seeing her so sick. Her ANC (cells that we are wanting to “grow”) did reach 0 last friday and have increased slightly the last 2 days (50).<\/div>\n

Paige has lost her voice this week from the mucositis and pain, causing a problem for her to be able to wake Lisa up during the night if she needs to go to the bathroom or vomit. Lisa suggested that she use her magic Elsa “wand” and hit her table to wake her up. Her response in a whisper was she didn’t want to do that because “it might wake up the girl in the next room”. She always a kind heart even in the worst possible point of her life.<\/div>\n

We would like to ask for prayer for Paige that she be relieved of her pain and able to start interacting and eating again. Specifically, we ask for prayer that her ANC count will continue to grow which will eventually improve her pain and sickness. Along with this please be praying that all of her LRBA cells have been fully destroyed. I would also like to ask for prayer for Lisa who has been an amazing momma (or machine as she calls herself) not leaving Paige’s side for the last 21 days. It is incredibly difficult to see your child so sick day after day, but Lisa has been extraordinary, and I can’t be more thankful of her sacrifice. Its also extremely mentally challenging to be on the 3rdfloor (oncology and BMT), occasionally seeing other patients or parents and knowing that some are even in much worse shape.
