I did not choose for my son to be so extremely sick. I did not choose for my son to be so sick for so long. I did not choose for my son to require 14 hours a week of literally just sitting next to a dialysis machine. I did not choose for my son to be deaf. I did not choose for my son to need six surgeries in the first six month that he was home. I did not choose for my son to be on three different blood pressure medications. In fact I didn’t really even choose my son any more than any other parent chooses their child. God chose Royce to be my son.

I remember crying as I read Royce’s medical files. I knew his medical history was being simplified to make him seem more appealing to an adoptive family. But I kept telling myself that his heart was healthy and his brain was healthy and we could deal with bad kidneys. I cried over the fact that I felt a connection to this child who may require lots of medical care. But deep inside I knew I had the strength to care for such a child. I already felt like his mother just as a woman feels like she is a mother to a child in her womb.

One thing that I am choosing to do is fight. I am fighting to make sure Royce gets the best medical care possible, to make sure he gets the best education possible, and to make sure he has the best childhood possible.

Please watch my interview with Jeff Duncan, where we talk about Royce and the upcoming COTA fundraiser in honor of Royce.

And please mark your calendars for Sunday March 8th, 2020 and join us for a pancake brunch, kid’s carnival, silent auction, and lots of fun!!

I did not choose for my son to be sick.
