This milestone comes as researchers study the potential for regenerative medicine approaches to dramatically transform how transplants are performed in the future. Regenerative medicine aims to shift the focus from treating disease to tapping the body&#8217;s ability to heal diseased cells, tissues and organs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mayo Clinic&#8217;s transplant history began in 1963, when surgeons performed the clinic&#8217;s first living donor kidney transplant. That same year, transplant teams completed Mayo Clinic&#8217;s first bone marrow transplant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Since those early days, Mayo Clinic&#8217;s transplant programs have expanded from kidney and bone marrow to face, hand, heart, liver, lung, pancreas and pediatric transplant programs. This year also marks the 20th anniversary of Mayo Clinic&#8217;s <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/departments-centers\/transplant-center\/home\/orc-20203891\">William J. von Liebig Center for Transplantation and Clinical Regeneration<\/a> in Rochester.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Mayo Clinic would never have been able to achieve this incredible milestone had it not been for the heroic decisions of donors and their families to give these lifesaving gifts,&#8221; says <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/quarterly.mayo.edu\/directory\/person\/person.htm?per_id=10827285&amp;displaymode=\">J.P. Scott, M.D.<\/a>, the transplant center&#8217;s interim director. &#8220;We are grateful for the trust transplant recipients and donors have placed in us, and proud of our caring transplant center staff who always put the needs of our patients first.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Timeline of transplant milestones<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mayo Clinic in Rochester has performed 8,808 bone marrow transplants, 6,297 kidney transplants, 3,198 liver transplants, 714 heart transplants, 538 pancreas transplants, 441 lung transplants, three islet cell transplants and one face transplant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Below is a timeline of transplant milestones at Mayo Clinic:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1963:<\/strong> Mayo Clinic performs first living donor kidney transplant and first bone-marrow transplant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1967:<\/strong> Mayo performs first deceased kidney donor transplant and first pediatric kidney transplant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1985:<\/strong> First liver transplant is performed at Rochester Methodist Hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1987<\/strong>: First combined liver\/kidney transplant and first kidney\/pancreas transplant is performed at Mayo Clinic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1988:<\/strong> Mayo Clinic performs first adult heart transplant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1990:<\/strong> Mayo Clinic performs first adult single lung transplant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1991<\/strong>: First pediatric heart transplant is performed at Mayo Clinic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1992<\/strong>: First combined heart\/liver transplant performed at Mayo and first pancreas alone transplant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1993:<\/strong> Mayo performs first adult double lung transplant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1994:<\/strong> First heart\/lung transplant and first split liver transplant performed at Mayo Clinic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1996:<\/strong> First combined heart\/liver\/lung transplant performed at Mayo Clinic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1999:<\/strong> Mayo Clinic performs first laparoscopic donor nephrectomy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>2000:<\/strong> First living donor liver transplant performed at Mayo Clinic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>2007:<\/strong> First kidney paired donation performed at Mayo Clinic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>2009:<\/strong> First sleeve gastrectomy\/liver transplant combined surgery and first kidney paired donor chain performed at Mayo Clinic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>2012:<\/strong> First total artificial heart as bridge to transplant performed at Mayo Clinic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>2016:<\/strong> Mayo Clinic performs first face transplant.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Future of transplant<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Researchers are studying how to use the latest technology and recent medical discoveries to transform how transplants will be performed in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/quarterly.mayo.edu\/directory\/person\/person.htm?per_id=14807335&amp;displaymode=\">Dennis Wigle, M.D., Ph.D.<\/a>, General Thoracic Surgery, sees <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mayo.edu\/research\/centers-programs\/center-regenerative-medicine\/about\">regenerative medicine<\/a> as key to the future of transplant. New therapies could allow for damaged or diseased organs to be repaired so they could be used for transplant. These breakthroughs also could help make sure transplanted organs remain healthy, preventing rejection or the need for a second transplant. Dr. Wigle&#8217;s research is focused on the potential for using a person&#8217;s own stem cells to build an artificial or new lung.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;What was really science fiction four or five years ago has become a potential clinical reality,&#8221; Dr. Wigle says. &#8220;Obviously, it&#8217;s a technology that is not going to be ready tomorrow or next week or even next year, but there&#8217;s a lot of groups that have made a ton of advances, including ours, in trying to work toward that goal as a reality.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ongoing need for donors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Until that future day arrives, the need for organ and bone marrow donors remains critical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Living donors can donate a kidney or a portion of their liver. Deceased donors can donate up to eight organs, corneas and other types of tissues. More than 112,000 people are on the waiting list for a lifesaving organ, according to the <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unos.org\/data\/transplant-trends\/\">United Network for Organ Sharing<\/a>.
