Since our last update, one major accomplishment is that he started walking! Because of his surgeries as an infant, for the first 4 months of life he was unable to do much tummy time or other exercises in order to let his sternum heal correctly. This delayed his physical development. It’s amazing how much just tummy time affects babies. It might not have been as noticeable if he didn’t have a twin sister, but we had two babies, one which was reaching milestones at the average age and one who was almost like an 18 month old infant. We were told by age two he would probably be caught up to the average child, and we found that to be true.

He had physical therapy and occupational therapy come to the house twice a month to help him develop his skills. He kind of skipped crawling even though he did know how to do it. His favorite mode of transportation for about 9 months was scooting on his bum. He was really fast and wore holes in a lot of pants doing that.

During his therapy sessions we would try to stand him up and see if he would take any steps. He would take the occasional step with help but nothing too promising. Then out of the blue, at 22 months old, we were outside and Asher was sitting on a bottom step. We looked over and he stood up and took about 10 steps towards us! He then walked all around the back patio for about 15 minutes like he had been holding on to this skill all along. He would take 10 steps or more before choosing to sit down, not falling down. We were so surprised because most kids will take a step or two and sit down and do that for a few days before they just stand up and walk around like a pro. It was amazing and we were so excited.

After he started walking, we met with his physical therapist and occupational therapist one more time and they determined that he was able to graduate from their services. It was amazing to see all the progress that our little boy made in his two years of life. Now he loves to run and jump and climb like any other happy little kid.

It has been a good year for Asher.
