Thank you for taking the time to read this and for your support!

This was our second pregnancy, Just like our first pregnancy we were super excited for our new family member. At 27 weeks pregnant, we found out about Iker’s heart condition during our emergency visit to our local hospital due to spotting, in need of the rhogam shot. And this is where our journey began.

In search for the babies heartbeat, the doctor and nurses would move the NST pads all over Bianca’s (mom) tummy. After about 5 minutes of search they finally found our babies heart beat but it was way too low. Monitoring at 60hpm the doctor looked super concerned and we were sent to University of Washington Medical Center.

After a lot of blood work, ultra sounds, and fetal echocardiograms our baby boy was diagnosed with 2nd degree heart block, liquid build up, and thickening of the heart muscle. We ended up living at UW Medical Center for almost two months because it was such a high-risk pregnancy.

It’s March 10th 2018 and we go in for our last appointment before our scheduled cesarean on March 12th 2018. During our appointment the nurse noticed baby Iker’s heart beat as low as 40hpm. And also noticed he was hardly moving or moving at all. We were sent up to a room in the labor and delivery floor for an ultra sound. During the ultra sound Iker’s heartbeat was 28hpm. So Dr. Cheng took Bianca in for emergency C-section.

Iker is now born March 10th 2018 at 7:19pm!! Soon after birth, the doctors prepare Iker for his first trip to Seattle Children’s Hospital. Once at Seattle children’s Hospital Iker gets heart studies, blood work and ultra sounds done. And that’s where the doctors tell us there was no VSD!! Great news!! But unfortunately also found that Iker had a left and right bundle branch block, and a left non-compaction ventricular, on top of all the other things.

We felt devastated to know how bad our baby’s heart was. But we weren’t going to give up, we were going to do anything we could to fight with Iker and fight for his life!

Dr. Chung (cardiologist) was able to stabilize Iker with medication and we were discharged from Seattle Children’s Hospital on March 29th and were finally going home, to Yakima Washington. Everything was going well and the whole family was happy to know Iker was doing great!

Comes July 24th Iker is unconscious, grey/dusky/purple and Bianca runs outside to get my help! I grab Iker and put him on the floor to perform CPR, while Bianca dials 911. After two minutes of CPR, Iker finally comes back but is very weak. Ambulance gets there and takes Bianca and Iker to our local hospital and we get discharged the next day. This happened to us twice, where we had to revive Iker because his heart would hit flat line, his heart would collapse. And on July 30th 2018, Seattle Children’s Hospital becomes our home again.

The plan to fix/stabilize most of Iker’s conditions were originally a pacemaker. So Thursday August 2nd, 2018 at 6pm, Iker is put into the O.R.

When the doctors opened Iker’s little chest, they were surprised how he had lived four months with such a damaged heart.

The 2-hour procedure turned into a 10-hour surgery. And had to get revived 3 times during the procedure. The plan to put a pacemaker failed. Different strategies were used and his heart wasn’t able to get paced.

Iker is then put on the ECMO machine. A type of life-support that is a double bladed sword. The ECMO saved his life but also came with a lot of risks due to the blood thinners used so it can function properly.

Blood clotting, excess bleeding, brain injury and other risks are the ones our little warrior has to fight everyday to stay alive while we wait for a heart transplant. Three other procedures were made in an effort to buy us more time to wait for a transplant but unfortunately nothing worked. Iker’s heart is too weak and worn and will be on ECMO until we find his heart. It is a race against the clock.

Anything will help! From the bottom of our hearts thank you for your time and generosity! We the family Suarez Medina appreciate It! Please come back to our COTA page for all of our little warrior’s updates!

—————————–

The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) helps children and young adults who need a life-saving transplant by providing fundraising assistance and family support.
