Symptoms Progressing and Finding Out Adriel Needs A Heart Transplant – June 2, 2023

On May 1, 2023 mom saw that he was retaining fluid again and his face was puffy. She called Dr. Parent, and the doctor had mom increase his Lasix medication to 3 times a day.

On May 9th, mom noticed that he stopped eating and then he stopped having wet diapers. She made a doctor appointment the next day with Adriel’s pediatrician, and the doctor sent family to Goshen hospital right away. Goshen hospital then told the family that his lab work was showing signs of heart failure, and that family would be transported to Riley Children’s Hospital. Mom and dad waited hours for an ambulance, but finally made it there at 3 am on May 11, 2023.

At first they had hoped that putting Adriel on an IV heart failure medicine would help his heart “kick start” again and hopefully be able to wean him off and go home. That was the goal. Adriel was slowly coming back around smiling, but he wasn’t walking. He was becoming weaker.

On May 18th, Adriel was transferred from a Step Down Unit to CVICU, because Adriel was having a hard time breathing and needed extra support with the high flow oxygen. There mom and dad still had hope to go home.

May 30, 2023 they decided to put a PICC line on him so they could stop poking him every morning. He had been placed on a ventilator and had a hard time coming off the ventilator. He didn’t end up coming off the ventilator for a couple days. Then a CVICU doctor came in and talked to mom, and she told her that Adriel wouldn’t be going home.

The doctor let her know that they had tried everything to wean him off his IV medicines but it wasn’t working, and that Adriel would need a heart transplant.

Mom and dad felt like their world had came crashing down. Next steps were yet to come…
