Can you remember back to your senior year? Think of all the memories and experiences that you had – finishing out your career as an athlete, receiving college acceptance letters, and asking your date to prom. All of the excitement for the next approaching chapter, all culminating in the day that you were able to walk across the stage and receive your diploma. 

However, for Alex, his life took an unexpected turn when he received a life-saving liver transplant the summer before his senior year. Instead of filling out college applications and attending home football games – Alex found himself in a hospital bed, attached to machines providing life-saving medical care. While Alex’s classmates celebrated the beginning of their senior year, Alex fought a different kind of battle, uncertain of the future ahead. 

Alex had to learn to speak again due to a tracheotomy, learn to write again as his muscles had severely deteriorated due to lack of use, and learn to care for his new liver. With each day, Alex continued to make strides in his recovery and grew stronger. 

Despite the many procedures, the setbacks, and the adjustment of a new way of living – Alex persevered. Alex held onto his dream of walking across the stage, wearing his cap and gown, and accepting the diploma he so rightfully earned. Alex’s diploma is not only a symbol of his academic abilities, but a symbol of Alex’s ability to face adversity and win. Alex’s adaptability and courage is truly inspiring.  

Alex’s high school journey did not go as expected in any sense of the word. Alex’s opportunity to graduate from high school would not have been possible without the ultimate sacrifice from his donor. As Alex’s family, we will always be grateful and honor the gift of life given to Alex. We look forward to seeing how Alex will continue to impact the world with his positive spirit and determination. We know he will make a difference in so many lives – he already has.
