Courage Like Cohen

First, thank you! Whether it’s reading & following along, praying, or donating to COTA for Co, we are humbled and overwhelmed with gratitude by the love you’ve shown to our family and to Cohen.

On Thursday (8/21) Cohen had a lung profusion scan which confirmed worsening of his Hepatopulmonary Syndrome. We suspected this from the drops in oxygen saturations we’ve been seeing throughout the day. The next big thing to be praying for is for no evidence of elevated pressure from his intracranial pressure test on Tuesday (8/26). He must pass this critical step before he can be reactivated on the transplant list. Please be praying along side us.

Cohen is an extremely courageous kid and handles the medical side of this journey like a champ. For this lung scan he toughed through 3 attempts at setting an IV and then held still for his scan for over 45 minutes while the profusion scan hovered 3 inches above his nose.

His courage is inspiring to us and those around him. His older sister decided to wear her “Courage Like Cohen” shirt in an effort to embrace his courage for her own surgery this week. This phrase goes along with a verse we are looking at to help center us. Deuteronomy 31:6. “So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you”. This is a promise we hold tightly in our own story.

  3. Hello Cohen! My goodness you are one brave and strong boy. I’m so impressed with you. My name is Charlie and my wife is Linda. We both grew up in the same town as your Papa McCarty! He is a good friend and I think that makes you my friend too! We just heard about your sickness and want you to know that we will pray for you and the Lord will be gracious to you, I’m sure of that. We have grandkids about your age and you remind us of them. We praise God for the care you are getting. Someday I will want to meet you along with your mom and dad and you can tell me all about how God cared for you above all else!
