2/23/25 Update – First Donor Call & Dry Run

On Wednesday night, 2/19/25, at 6 pm we got the call we been waiting for!! TCH called and told us that they had donor liver offer for Crue! They told us to get to Houston ASAP so they can begin prep for transplant surgery from noon Thursday.

We got on the road as quick as possible and got to Houston at 12:30am. They got us into a room and then came bloodwork at 3:30 in the morning! We were finally able to get Crue asleep at 4:30! Then came 6:15 wake up to go get a chest X-ray. After the X-ray he was done with the prep and got him some rest. Now came the nervous wait to see the donor liver was going to be a perfect match for him.

They had warned us many times, along with other TCH parents, that they are very picky with the livers and only go with a perfect match unless there is a desperate need to. When you go through all the prep and the liver is deemed to not be the right match it’s called a dry run. TCH flew out 3 of their 5 surgeons to go get the liver and review it. Around 11:15a we got the news that they considered the donor’s liver was not the right size match for Crue. It was an emotional let down even though we were prepared for that news as a possibility.

We originally had a check up appointment scheduled for this Monday. They were discussing to transition from the NG feeding tube to TPN feeding. TPN is a central port where they put a catheter into his vein which feeds him all his required nutrition through the IV central port. TPN is completely customize based on his bloodwork to correct any imbalances he may have and provide a perfect diet. Since he was already admitted into the hospital, they decided to keep him here til Monday and do the TPN procedure. After the procedure he will have to stay in the hospital for a few days for them to customize his nutrition and teach us how to do his feeding bags.

It’s said that once you get your first offer the next offers should start to come not long after once you get to that point on the list. Until then we start the TPN feeding, hopefully get the NG tube removed and wait for the next donor call. We will keep everyone posted with any updates.

The fundraiser in honor of Crue is doing well and is off to a good start. We hope to continue that momentum. All donations to COTA in honor of Crue assist with his lifetime of transplant related expenses. Thank you for your generosity!

Thank you so much for helping Baby Crue!
