4-20-25: Day 7 of Healing Journey

It’s been a long, emotional week — one filled with victories, but also a sobering reminder of just how far we still have to go. Eric has been through so much, and although there have been wins along the way, recovery is proving to be a steep and winding road.

Yesterday was tough. When Eric was awake, he tried to work on some Legos, something he’s always enjoyed, but his motor skills just aren’t there yet. He couldn’t place the pieces together. Even something as simple as putting a spoon in a cup — he tried three times and missed each one. He also tried using his phone, but he couldn’t manage it. For a moment, I thought maybe his vision was blurry, but he told me that wasn’t it.

I’m trying so hard to understand what he needs, to be there for him in the ways that matter most. But it’s difficult. It’s frustrating. It’s heartbreaking.

I have to remind myself what his body has been through. This isn’t just a recovery from surgery — they reconstructed his body. Eric had dextrocardia, which means his heart was on the right side of his chest. The surgeons moved it to the left. On top of receiving a brand new heart, his entire internal structure was altered.

With that in mind, I know I can’t expect him to be up and walking just yet. But still, nothing could have prepared me to see him so helpless. It hurts in a way I can’t fully explain.

But we’re here. We’re fighting. And every day, no matter how hard, is a step forward.

Thank you for walking with us through this.
