Three weeks post-transplant, and it’s been a rollercoaster.
This week, Eric started running fevers, so some procedures—like his kidney biopsy and cath line change—were delayed. BUT we were able to get a heart biopsy done which helps us monitor for rejection, and so far his heart is doing well.
We also learned Eric has CMV, a common but serious virus for transplant patients. It was caught early (thankfully while we’re still in the hospital) and treatment has begun.
We’re learning a lot about his new normal:
• No swimming in lakes, pools, or hot tubs
• No grapefruit, pomegranate, Sunny D, or anything with those juices
• No NSAIDs (like ibuprofen)
• No buffets—he was pretty sad about the Chinese buffet one
All of this is to protect his immune system and make sure his new heart keeps working for a long, long time.
He’s still not talking much, but he’s trying more each day. His strength amazes me.
One important reminder:
If you’re planning to visit Eric, please be 100% healthy. If you’re sick or have been around someone who is—please wait. His immune system is fragile, and we can’t risk anything.
Thank you for continuing to love and support our boy. We feel it every day.
