Evan’s transplant journey is unique to most, because he was officially diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and it was determined he would need a heart transplant just weeks before his 18th birthday and starting his senior year of high school. Evan suddenly started experiencing symptoms in June 2023, which put his life on pause immediately due to how poorly his heart is functioning. The doctors have been amazing and have tried to stabilize him with oral medications. At this point in time, he is dependent on IV medication to help his heart pump more efficiently. Evan also has to wear a LifeVest 24/7 in case he experiences any heart rhythm issues. Medical staff have communicated to the family that without the transplant, he will not get much better just with the IV medications. However, they are working hard to make sure he does not get worse. He is currently listed on the transplant list and waiting for the “magical phone call”. The call could come in a few days or it could be months. Even after getting the call and the transplant, Evan will have months of recovery and obstacles.
Evan was fortunately able to go home on July 7th, 2023 where he can wait as comfortably as possible, versus staying in the hospital. This does not come without its obstacles and continuous monitoring. Additionally, Evan and his parents have appointments and checkups in Kansas City – which means hours on the road, cost to travel/stay if needed and time away from work for both Evan and the family.
Fun facts about Evan:
Favorite food: BBQ
Loves: Hunting, fishing, camping and working on his truck
Goals: get back to “normal life”, graduate in May and hopefully work for his dad next summer.
