Operation Poop Chute
Surgery yesterday was perfect, everything went as well as expected. Faith is resting and very tired today. Her doctor was just in to talk about the plan again some more. She had very specific goals about pain meds and getting up, moving early. Her gut is not awake yet and she is still pretty distended from surgery, so for now it is just lots of rest and patience. They won’t push too much and she will stay NPO (nothing by mouth) until we start getting bowel sounds again. This is the part that sucks, we could get good bowel sounds in one day or five days, just have to wait. Also, to be clear bowel sounds and gas is function, that is step one. Step two, which will come a little later, will be actual POOP!
He did get to take a good look at about 2 feet of the bowel and he said it looks beautiful from the outside, looks like an amazing healthy bowel.
FYI – Your bowel can look completely different on the outside than the inside. Faith for example, always had clean and good looking colonoscopies in the past, when they did her colectomy they said her colon actually looked very diseased and unhealthy. I always thought it was interesting how different the bowel could look inside vs outside.
