Our Story

Hayden Murnahan is a ten year old boy waiting on a second kidney transplant.  When Hayden was nine months old, he was diagnosed with stage IV Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).  Hayden was three when he received a living donor transplant on May 7th, 2012.   The past few years Hayden has struggled with several bouts of rejection, severe hypertension and numerous viruses that his body just can’t get rid of.

Dr’s have determined that Hayden needs to undergo a nephrectomy (kidney removal), have a hemo and peritoneal catheter placed in June. Hayden will have to stay at Children’s Mercy for at least a month after the nephrectomy to receive hemo dialysis. Once his peritoneal catheter is healed, he will be able to return home and do dialysis at home every night.

Hayden will be listed as inactive on the transplant list in February. Once the viruses are out of his system, he can be listed as active on the transplant list. Our hope is that Hayden is not on dialysis longer than a year.

The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) helps children and young adults who need a life-saving transplant by providing fundraising assistance and family support. COTA is the nation’s only fundraising organization solely dedicated to raising life-saving dollars in honor of transplant-needy children and young adults. 100% of each contribution made to COTA in honor of our patients helps meet transplant-related expenses. COTA’s services are free to our families, and gifts to COTA are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
