Long weekend and 4 weeks post surgery

We made the best of the warm weather this long weekend. Three pool trips including the local outdoor pool. It has a diving board and a rock wall so we plan to return again soon. Jack’s best friend came down to visit and Jack and I got a hotel room at the same hotel so they could play Minecraft all night (aka 10pm). They also went swimming (again) and picnicked on the patio. Jack was so happy, it was wonderful to see an extended glimpse of normalcy. We are so lucky to have such wonderful people around us showering us with love. We are so grateful.

On Monday before everyone went home, we all went to the aquarium and saw the mermaids (there until June 25 so come visit me and we can go) and Jack and as able to walk the whole thing without issue. Every day he’s stronger. By the time everyone went home, Jack was exhausted. This weekend pushed his physical strength to its limits and he was still paying for it today.

Today we had our one month follow up with surgery. The doctor was thrilled with jacks progress and couldn’t get over how healed the scar was. He does not need to see us before we go home. So that’s 1/4 of the teams sign off to go home.3 to go… Between appointments Jack worked on his schoolwork. His little brother sat with him and did ‘schoolwork’ too. It’s really nice to have 50% of the kiddos here. I keep reminding the middle two we will only be apart for 2.5 more weeks max. If we aren’t home by the time school ends then they will join us down here. Let’s hope we don’t have to…I feel confident enough with Jacks recovery that I’m ready to go home. Fingers crossed the other teams agree with me at our appointments this week.

Tomorrow we have endocrinology and PT. Jacks glucose levels are all over the places this weekend which makes sense because he’s more active and eating more. I think we need to make a couple tweaks to his insulin formula but I don’t anticipate it to be a major concern. Last week we discussed the potential to just do calls and emails if we wanted to be home sooner.
Thursday we meet with the pancreas team and will have a better idea of timeline. Until then we keep moving along and help Jack get stronger every day. The hardest is definitely behind us.

  1. What a great post Elizabeth! Through all this you are so positive! That kind of attitude no doubt has aided Jack’s healing and getting stronger. You could right a book! Climb higher Jack! You having people you haven’t even met praying and thinking of you everyday.
