6 Months Post-Op

I can’t believe it’s already been six months since Jack’s TPIAT surgery! The months have somehow simultaneously flown by and lasted forever. Jack is doing awesome and continuing to thrive.

Jack ran his first official 5k earlier this month! He was able to complete it in 33 minutes even in the rain! We’re so proud of him. There’s no way he could have done that a year ago. He’s so much stronger now than he ever was. He still has a ways to go, but he’s working hard in PT weekly and challenging himself at the climbing gym.

We had Jack’s 6 month follow up last week. His blood panels are looking more normal than ever! We have begun the process of insulin weaning. He no longer takes insulin with meals, and his base rate was lowered. The endocrinologist is confident he should fully wean from insulin, at least until puberty hits hard. His glucose tolerance test showed his islets are taking and working hard. This is exciting news! We are cautiously optimistic, but it’s also important to remember that the islet cells will always be at risk, and we need to continue to be diligent on keeping his glucose within a safe range. He is struggling to gain weight, so we are adding lots of calories to meals and hoping it’ll right itself over the next few months.

We go back in February for his 9 month follow up. Until then, Jack just keeps recovering and working hard! Our family will be heading to NYC soon as Jack’s dad is running the NYC marathon for the National Pancreas Foundation! It’s exciting, and even more exciting is that we haven’t done any research on nearest hospitals specializing in pancreas care. Day by day, life seems to be heading towards normalcy!
