Transplant journey round 1- unsuccessful

Kova reached 22 pounds back in August. We got all the evaluations done and he was placed active on the transplant list January 10th 2022. On February 17th we got the call for a deceased donor kidney for Kova. It was placed during a long 5 hour surgery. The surgery was more complicated than they had anticipated. The next day it was determined there was a clot in the artery of the new kidney. The clot was removed. However, the kidney was not able to be salvaged. It was removed on February 21st. Kova had a long hospital stay once the kidney was removed and then got discharged March 11th. We were arranged to go for hemodialysis (Kova has to remain on dialysis still) on March 14th. At this appointment his incision opened and his bowels were exposed. He had to go for immediate surgery. He spent 3 weeks in the hospital after the surgery to close his abdomen and now we are on our third hospital stay after that one. 2022 has been rough to say the least. Looking forward, we have been told by our team that they do not advise us to go back to the same center for his next transplant. We need a center experienced with small children and complicated cases. This means we will be travelling. At this point options we are deciding from include Cincinnati Children’s, Shands in Gainsville, or Miami. We are grateful for any support anyone can offer during these very trying times for our family. The next round is going to be expensive and stressful.
