Cafeteria finally open! Play doh in stock in the art room!

Today was a good day. We started the day off with labs. Lauren remarked she does not care for having blood drawn. It went well as she remembered to eat and drink before hand. She says the draw goes easier that way. She is so smart! And a little too worldly for her age. Ah well. Twelve year olds shouldn’t have to know these things.

She read last night’s blog post and asked, “there is PLAY DOH down there?! I know what I want to do after labs!” So after a quick bonus snack in the hospital cafeteria, off we went to the art room! It is washed and renewed every Monday morning. All blank white walls to worn with. There really are down talented children about! We did play doh up until lunch.

Lunch is an all new affair at the Ronald McDonald house! They have finally reopened the kitchen and dining hall! No more eating in our rooms like in a jailhouse!

“Come on in! Just grab a tray and pick out what you like. Just like school, but with better food. We really try to make things as comfortable and homey for you as possible.”

“Thank you. I can tell a lot of care goes into these meals. They have more spices and sauces and garnishes than is typical. I can tell, even if it’s not a dish you care for, more effort went into it than would be the simplest way to make it.”

“I’m glad to hear someone appreciates it. That’s what we really strive for .”

Lauren was a little nervous. She felt like she “didn’t know what I was doing in the chow line.” I assured her that this is everyone’s first time too, even the chefs. The cafe Is really loud, bustling with the sounds of previously cooped up families. I’m not sure Lauren likes it. She thinks I have hearing loss just like mom, I can’t hear her in the cafe! Her voice is slowly getting stronger. But I still can’t hear her across a quiet room, or across a loud table. Another cross to bear.

Later in th day, it was a trip to cardiac rehab, which is more or less a prescribed workout routine. Lauren often dislikes this, as any sane person sometimes would, but she is motivated to get stronger! She has not asked to call in sick! Go Lauren!
