The past two weeks have been sheer, unabashed hell to endure.
It all started exactly two weeks ago when Logan spiked a fever and his blood pressures dropped. Since then its been a cascade of different scary symptoms and a feeling of waiting for things to get better, to no avail. The day after Logan spiked a fever we noticed blood in his urine, the presumed cause of which is the Adeno virus breaking down the lining of his bladder, coupled with a low platelet count that magnifies the problem. He also tested positive for a bacterial infection of Klebsiella that the doctors believed underlied his persistent fevers, along with the Adeno virus. Many efforts have been taken to get the bacterial infection under control, including different cocktails of antibiotics and pulling his port, where it was believed the Klebsiella was latching on to.
There have been times where it feels we might be rounding a corner, but then symptoms return or new ones emerge. At the heart of this all is the fact that Logan is still extremely immunocompromised from the chemotherapy he received three weeks ago. He needs immunity to fight the virus and bacteria. Under normal circumstances, his immunity would have returned by now. But it is believed that the virus itself is suppressing the return of the white blood cells at this point. Each day we’ve woken up hopeful that those counts will rise, and each day we are crestfallen to see that they have not.
All the while, Logan has endured fevers and peeing blood. And in the past few days, he has also had very bloody stools which have required intervention with blood and platelet transfusions to stabilize his vital signs. He also has a viral rash that went from his back to his arms to his abdomen. The new GI bleed symptoms have landed us back in the PICU for closer monitoring and management.
This is all so much. On him and on us. To say we’re all at wits end is an understatement. We have asked before and will ask again now for your hope and prayers, specifically for Logan’s immune system to rebound and fight off the infections that are wreaking havoc on him.
