Setback

It has been a bit of a rough past 24 hours.

Unfortunately, a repeat ultrasound done this morning found that Macy does in fact have a blood clot in her neck where the port line was removed and it has grown and also become mobile. The main concern is that it could travel through her heart and into her lungs. It was determined that we needed to increase her blood thinners from a profylactic dose of Eliquis to a theraputic dose. The quickest way to do so is with a heparin drip. But, last night Macy lost her IV and they were unable to find a vein to replace it..that marked 8 pokes for IV’s in the past 3 days and her veins just keep blowing. So we ended up having to wait for the day shift PICC team who specialize in placing IV’s and/or PICC lines using ultrasound. Thankfully by noon, we had a good IV to hopefully last a few days and we are back on track with IV antibiotic and heparin. They will be closely monitoring levels as they can be tricky, even more so with comprimised kidney function.

I have not asked how this impacts our plans for a new port and discharge. The blood clot took a bit of an emotional toll today. Macy doesn’t remember everything she has been through especially pre-transplant, but one thing she vividly remembers is having a blood clot in her heart 12 years ago, on a TPA drip for 2+ weeks. It was a traumatic time for all of us. It took us some time to process today. Ultimately, we are so thankful to have accidentally found this clot so that it can be properly treated. It’s a good reminder that God is protecting Macy through each twist and turn.

Please pray for Macy’s safetly and her spirit. We were so grateful to have friends visit today. It makes a HUGE difference.
