Today was the start of Max’s weekly visits to Children’s hospital in Milwaukee for his post transplant appointments. We will be traveling 3 times a week for at least the next several weeks for labs and clinic check ups. With each appointment Max will have labs drawn to monitor kidney function and be evaluated for rejection. Thankfully he is a trooper with having his blood drawn. Today’s lab results show that his kidney function is doing well and there are no signs of rejection. Music to our ears!
Travis and I are still learning so much during appointments and here at home after the transplant. Max’s medication regimen is a bit overwhelming, but we think we have a system intact, at least until the doctors change it. We try not to let our anxieties take over by taking time to breathe in the gratitude of all the love, prayers and support that our family is receiving. We are finding that our parenting skills have been a bit flip-flopped. In days before the surgery we would be scheduling activities for our family, especially the boys to stay active and busy. Now since surgery we are finding that we need to schedule less activity and more rest and relax time. Never would I thought I would have to scold Max for riding his bike or tell him no that he cant take batting practice with his brother. Yes, kids are resilient but Max might be a little too resilient in his thinking, especially with it being less than 2 weeks after a major surgery. No worries though, you wont be finding me on a bike or swinging a bat any time soon! In learning to slow down and relax we are taking naps, watching movies, coloring, doing word searches, playing way too many video games, playing cards and games and catching up on lots of good books.
