3/19/2024 – Visitors Please…😉

Greetings, friends of the Rockeys!

Miranda was transferred to Southpointe Healthcare Center last Thursday, March 14. Overall, the transition went well. There are some big differences between the Rehab Center (RHI) where Miranda participated in 3 hours of therapy per day and the new facility. We’re still trying to determine exactly how much therapy she will receive at Southpointe, but we know it will be significantly less.

Given some of these changes, Miranda now has a significant amount of downtime during her day. As interactions and stimulation are critical for Miranda’s growth/healing process, it has become important to invite a larger circle of friends to come see her.

Ideally, we are seeking individuals who can commit to a regular weekly visit, morning, afternoon, or evening and for any amount of time possible. We’ve created a Google doc where you can sign up for a time that works for you. Obviously you will not always be able to make it every week. If you can’t, please notify either Beth Booram or Elisa Powell.

If you come to visit Miranda, we wanted to share a little more about her growth/needs, as it may help guide you in your visits. Because of her traumatic brain injury(TBI) following transplant  surgery, Miranda struggles with short term memory loss and her vision has been affected. When you arrive, please announce to Miranda who you are. Announcing yourself helps Miranda gain a sense of what is occurring and who all is there with her.

Miranda’s hands/arms were also significantly affected by the TBI. While she has regained some movement and control, she still relies on other people to help her eat (small bites) and drink(small sips). She has definitely appreciated people bringing in snacks/meals from outside—Chick-Fil-A nuggets, milkshakes, Chipotle, even just a Snickers bar!

Just so you know, Miranda is able to engage in conversation about many things she remembers prior to the injury. She speaks slowly, but is clear and concise and still has her great wit and sarcasm!

We will have a journal in Miranda’s room. We ask that when you visit her, please record your name, time and date of visit, and any other information you feel would be helpful for us to talk with Miranda about later.

Thank you all for your love and care for Miranda, Joel, and the kids. Whether you can visit in person or not, the family is grateful for all your kind words and support!!
