On March 21st, we traveled to Kansas City for Nahla to undergo a liver biopsy. Unfortunately, we received difficult news last week: she has a 4/9 score for rejection on the clinic’s rejection scale. Additionally, she is showing signs of fibrosis (scarring of the liver). While this is treatable in most cases, it means she will need to go back on steroids, which come with a number of side effects, including irritability, increased hunger, “moon face,” and heightened immunosuppression, making her more vulnerable to illness.
Along with the steroids, she will also begin a new anti-rejection medication aimed at potentially reversing some of the fibrosis. We remain hopeful that this will be a temporary setback and that the medications will help resolve these issues.
We are incredibly grateful for all the continued love and support from each of you during this challenging time. Thank you so much for standing by us.
