We had a lovely dinner at home last night. Sarah had some energy and was determined to cook a delicious meal. Our go-to seafood market recommended Opa, a Hawaiian fish. Wow, it was amazing and afterwards we sat on the balcony playing games. Then, completely unexpected, the call comes in which a donor has lungs for her! Although it sounded promising, Sarah didn’t want to raise her hopes but frankly it’s hard not to. It was time to get to the hospital for a myriad of tests. During this time the donor’s lungs were being evaluated and so we waited over 9 hours. Finally, Sarah was elated with the news that those were going to be her new lungs. And so, she was whisked off to the operating room.
On June 29th, Sarah underwent her second double lung transplant at Tampa General Hospital. As one chapter in Sarah’s journey has ended, another is emerging. We are so grateful for the donor’s family for making such a selfless wonderful gift of life. Our heart goes out with such sadness to them as they mourn the loss of their loved one.
Surgery took 10 hours but it was finally over. Her surgeon reported that Sarah had done fantastic. She was transitioned to ICU where she has an amazing multidisciplinary team taking care of her. And we just love her pulmonologist who is the best ever. She’s in good hands.
