T-18 and counting

Yesterday, we completed all of our pre-op appointments. Sienna got to ask all of her questions, and we heard the logistics of the transplant and timeline. Her surgeon is amazing. He is so knowledgeable and yet relatable. He is patient with our questions and explains things in the way she likes to hear them. Sienna wants to know specifics and details and what things will FEEL like. She processes best with information, and I am grateful to her medical team for recognizing her need for details.

Her surgeon has not decided which kidney they will transplant. It will depend on her donor’s final scan and today’s venogram results. He will not remove either of her native kidneys though, so she will have 3. There are many benefits to keeping her kidneys in place.

Today’s venogram will give us the final look at her recanalized IVC. Less than a year ago, she had no blood flow through her inferior vena cava. When they did the last venogram, her right side was fairly normal, and her left side needed some ballooning. They were very impressed with how it looked then and are optomistic that today both sides will be fully functional.

She is nervous. She is such a warrior – faces everything with courage and her game face. To Doug and I, she says she wants to go home. She doesn’t want to do today, but knows its another step forward. She is a master at distracting herself.

Keep her in your prayers. We have been so blessed to be surrounded by so much love and support.
