Our Story

Abed is 16 years old and has lived with kidney issues his whole life. Before he was born a blockage in his bladder was found that had already damaged his kidneys and his entire urinary system, leaving the right kidney with no function. He has had only one kidney since 2015, and the remaining one has very low function.

In late 2021 he started dialysis and after 46 surgeries over his 16 years he was referred for a kidney transplant.

His mother is trying to be his donor, has completed all testing, and is waiting on only 2 test results to see if she can donate. Whether she can donate or he gets a deceased donor, she will be out of work for a month to recover or to be by Abed’s side. His dad is his full-time care giver so he doesn’t work.

Any donations made to COTA in honor of Abed will assist with transplant-related expenses, such as current medical bills not covered by insurance and travel related to his transplant. Funds can also assist with future transplant-related expenses. The care for transplants patients is life long and critical for their success and health. We partnered with COTA for Abed to ensure he has access to care for future needs that will arise.

Thank you for reading his story and considering helping with continuing Abed’s journey of caring for his health.

The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) helps children and young adults who need a life-saving transplant by providing fundraising assistance and family support. COTA is the nation’s only fundraising organization solely dedicated to raising life-saving dollars in honor of transplant-needy children and young adults. 100% of each contribution made to COTA in honor of our patients helps meet transplant-related expenses. COTA’s services are free to our families, and gifts to COTA are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
