Two weeks ago today, David and I sat in a waiting room all by ourselves for hours, anxiously awaiting any news on Bella’s progress. We have had many ups and downs since then. Bella did very well immediately following surgery. We thought we would be discharged on Wednesday 4/28. On 4/28 we were packing our belongings in anticipation of being let go that afternoon. About lunch time one of the doctors came in to tell us that Bella’s labs were showing elevated antibody levels, indicating possible rejection. We were so scared!!! The doctors wanted to treat very aggressively, so we had 3 days of IV steroids and one day of additional IV anti rejection medications. We also had to go back to the Cath Lab for a biopsy. Fortunately the biopsy came back negative for rejection. Post Heart Cath, Bella’s X-rays were showing increased fluid on her left lung. The treatment for this is IV diuertics 5 times per day. Today the X-ray is showing slight improvement. As a precaution Bella will have all food and drink held after midnight tonight so that in the event that the X-ray is not improved tomorrow, they will have to place another chest drain tube. Bella looks great. She complains that she is bored. She was so disappointed that she had to spend her birthday in the hospital. Her birthday was an all day party, they made sure to make her feel special. She did say that she had a great day despite being hospitalized. Bella misses her big sister terribly. We would like to thank everyone for the cards, gifts, and COTA Campaign support so far. We feel so blessed by our community.
