Franklin was discharged home with his LVAD in September 10th. We enjoyed him at home for almost two weeks before we took him to the ER for a nosebleed that we just could not stop. The ENT doctors stopped the nosebleed and we were just about to go home when we got the results of the chest X-ray that was ordered. It was a very fortunate “incidental“ finding that Franklin had a large right hemothorax that compressed half of his right lung. His red blood cell count had also gone down significantly since I his clinic visit two days prior. We noticed that he was having a bit of breathing difficulty when the head of his bed was lowered but thought it was due to fluid overload. It seemed to have gotten better as his diuretics did their work. The doctor’s called it a spontaneous hemothorax related to Franklin’s elevated INR from his blood thinners. Franklin got admitted and a chest tube was placed. They ended up draining over a liter of blood from his chest. It was truly amazing that Franklin was able to deal with this while not being more symptomatic. Franklin ended up staying at the hospital a week and a half before being discharged on the 2nd of October.
