We have been SPRUNG!!!
We got the go-ahead to leave the hospital in late morning (do you think we had enough stuff to bring home???). Lindsey will need to return to the hospital at least twice a week for the next few weeks for labs and follow up appointments, and will need to have a follow-up surgery to close her stomach muscles in 6-18 months. That surgery is simpler and has a shorter hospital stay, but is supposed to be quite painful. So, no rush….
We helped Lindsey unpack and organize some things in our apartment before walking to Market Square about a block away.
Market Square is a little plaza that has 10-15 restaurants and a few stores around it. Some of them have closed permanently or temporarily due to COVID, but there are several still open. We tried The Yard which is known for its indulgent grilled cheese sandwiches. Lindsey and Mike split garlic parmesean chicken wings and the Patty Mayo grilled cheese, which comes with two burger patties, swiss cheese, white cheese sauce, sauteed mushrooms, carmelized onions, and garlic mayo. I tried the Smack-Yo-Mama with beer cheese, cheddar, and onion straws (and it usually also has pulled chicken).
Lindsey is still not eating large amounts, but that chicken wing stood no chance against her!
After lunch we putzed around doing laundry, putting away suitcases, and making a grocery list. Then everybody took naps. Lindsey slept like a rock for about 4 hours – much more solid sleep than she could get in the hospital.
Word continues to spread about our blog and COTA fundraising campaign. We are amazed and thrilled that we have crossed the $15,000 mark! These funds will be available to Lindsey when she needs to be on her own insurance, to help with transplant-related medication copays, lab tests, trips to Pittsburgh for followups, and more.
Many thanks to Marti Boda, Case Lancaster, Tracy Myrick, Nichole Calhoun, Jeff and Shirlene Wuepper, Lee Dow, and Terrie Alfafara for their recent donations!
Mazel tov, Lindsey. It’s a whole new world (another song), and I’m so glad to see how well you’re doing. All our best wishes.
