Madison was born on May 25, 2005. The next morning we received the biggest shock ever when we were told that Madison was born with a heart defect and that she would need to be transported to another hospital. After being transported to Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital we were informed that Madison had multiple congenital heart defects, one being that she had a single ventricle heart and that she would need a series of surgeries over the next couple of years. Madison had a stent placed at six days old by Heart cath. At six months old Madison had her first open heart surgery. When she was four years old she had her second open heart surgery and then a week later she had another heart surgery to have a pacemaker placed. Two years later Madison had a hole closed by Heart cath and then at age 12 Madison had same day surgery to have her battery changed in her pacemaker. In addition to this she has had multiple heart Caths over the years. To see Madison everyday you would never know she had a heart condition. She has always been energetic, happy and full of life . She enjoyed riding her bike, cheerleading, chorus and acting in plays with the youth program at our town playhouse. Recently she started showing signs that something wasn’t right, she was tired all the time, retaining fluid and just didn’t feel good. After taking her to the doctor and then being admitted to Arnold Palmer Hospital we were informed that Madison would need to be transferred to Shands Children’s Hospital in Gainesville, two and a half hours from home, to be evaluated for a heart transplant. After being at Shands for a month, Madison’s Heart continued to weaken and she had to have open heart surgery to be put on a Berlin heart. She is now at Shands awaiting a heart transplant.
