On May 10th Ryder had X-rays and an appointment with a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. He examined his knees and as he suspected Ryder is slightly knocked kneed. The bony look to his knees, the initial difference Ryder noticed, is due to the renal disease trying to pull calcium and caused widening of his plates. He also discovered that Ryder has abnormal growth plates in the knees as well. There’s a lot to consider here. Growth hormones might be more urgent due to the abnormal growth plates and a follow up with endocrinology is already set in place. The biggest concern is the knock knees. While as of right now it is mild and if it stays this way it would not likely cause issues for him in the future. Unfortunately there is no knowing wether this will get worse as he grows. If it did, that would require a major surgery to correct later. Right now there is a smaller surgical procedure that we can try where metal plates are inserted into both knees to possibly correct or at least keep the misalignment from increasing but due to his age we only have a small window to try this now. The doctor was not comfortable with giving any stats or percentages so we are currently exploring a second opinion before making a final decision. #TeamRyder
