After a random health visit with his pediatrician on January 25th… Ryder was hospitalized the next day… for 6 days with extensive tests and a kidney biopsy turns out his kidney function is at 11%… and is at stage 5 kidney failure. They know that this has happened during the past 5 years… they know it is a genetic issue and will begin genetic testing next week and will take 45 days to get results. Hopefully this will give them the answers as to why this is happening?? Ryder has been home for 2 weeks now… and with 25 pills per day, 3 injections per week, weekly lab tests and major change in diet… his kidneys seem to be stable and some of his other numbers are improving. He will begin peritoneal dialysis, which is administered at home at night while he is sleeping this way his quality of life will be much better… he will need surgery to prepare the body for this type of dialysis and will be hospitalized for 3-5 days. We do not have a firm date yet but should be around the end of the month. Looking down the road kidney transplant is unavoidable. Although it feels like we’ve been thru hell and back… and there is still so much uncertainty… for now we have settled into this new routine for Ryder… and he is taking the news like the amazing kid he is… staying strong… and back to his silly self.
