Sometimes we like to focus on Winston’s successful liver transplant as the final completion of all of his medical needs. But, the harsh medical reality is that his Alagille Syndrome diagnosis is a life-long complicated medical process and there are no cures. Yes, we are thankful and praise God for this new liver capability, but we need to remind ourselves that Alagille’s can bring other organ issues (kidney and heart for example) and other side effects (eye sight and immune system problems for example) at any time. Most of the documented Alagille’s cases seem to note a primary medical problem and then minor issues and symptoms that are treatable over time. We hope and pray that Winston’s primary medical problem was the need for a new liver, that he has been blessed with a complete successful liver transplant, and that future issues and symptoms will be minor and treatable over time.
Right now, the family is focused on completing a hospital stay (ICU and regular room for 3-6 weeks best case) and then a local San Antonio stay (for frequent followup tests and doctor visits near the hospital for an additional 4-6 weeks best case). We hope and pray that the new liver will provide Winston with an ability to thrive and achieve “normal” activities that a 4 year old boy enjoys!
So, the harsh medical realities for Winston remind all of us how fragile life is and the need to seek God’s wisdom and blessing, no matter the outcomes in this world. Winston’s family humbly and simply asks all of you reading this to periodically pray for Winston in his earthly life-long quest for “normalcy,” whatever that will be for him. We also ask for you to pray for Alyssa, Jordan, and all of the medical personnel involved with his care.
Thank you for your prayer support!
God is good!
