Okay it’s been a few days but I think we are finally at a good place. The last few days have been crazy. Abbey was finally transferred to the step down units in the endocrinology wing from the PICU. While I wasn’t 100% comfortable with the transfer I get that technically she wasn’t needing ICU care anymore. On our transfer day she had an extremely high heart rate all day and was still in extreme pain and vomiting. Finally around 8pm on of the surgeons came by to look at her and she spiked a 101.8 fever. Due to Abs no longer having a spleen we experienced our first fever protocol. The protocol included a ton of labs two being blood cultures. Therefore meaning fresh IV blood draws and a new IV being set. They also started her on two different IV antibiotics to cover any and all possible bacterial infections. Also due to all of the vomiting we opted to stop her feeds to see how she responded. We finally started seeing her heart rate go down but all day yesterday she was wiped out. Our amazing NP then being stumped as to why she was vomiting every time we were on feed she took a deep dive into the ingredients in her formula. Lo and behold one of the ingredients used for protein is made from chicken feathers. Abs FPIES is an allergy to all forms of poultry. So now everything was starting to make sense. We changed her formula back to her peptide 1.0 started her antibiotics and she started to turn a corner. She was pretty wiped out all day yesterday and started feeling better around 6 last night when we went for a walk and she was actually able to eat real food without throwing up! She remained fever free until this morning when she spiked a second fever at 101.1. Now we had to run labs again and act on our second fever protocol. This morning was busy busy, another lab drawing, a failed catheter attempt, JP drains pulled and finally PT. After all of that we can back to the room she passed out and Sam videoed in for our diabetes education hour. Over all Abbey is finally in a much better place. She just showered and ate her dinner and is watching Sonic. On a non Abbey related note Mom is having Mexican food withdrawals and NEEDs good spicy chips and salsa and real fajitas. ????
